Chalong

With its 500-metre-long pier, this is the jumping-off point for many of the scuba diving trips and tours that go out to the islands off the east coast. Forget the beach here – if you want sand, head a little south to Friendship Beach.

Rawai

This is where Phuket’s first resort, The Phuket Island Resort (now the Evason) was built. The sand is not as beautiful as on the west coast and the sea goes a long way out at low tide, but Rawai has a charm of its own, not least because of the laid-back atmosphere of the many restaurants.

Kata Beach

Two beautiful white beaches – Kata and Kata Noi – were among the first to see the building of holiday homes a dozen years ago. The main Kata beach, in particular, is popular – less raunchy and more sophisticated than Patong, it has a world-class range of restaurants and bars and some very beautiful homes to rent.

Cape Panwa

If you’re not too worried about beaches (frankly, forget it), but you appreciate beautiful high-up views across ocean and islands, then Cape Panwa is the place for you.

Karon Beach

This is a long, straight beach with beautiful white sand and safe water, along with hotels, restaurants, bars and other entertainment at each end, in Karon town to the north and Kata to the south.

Patong

Phuket’s prime tourist destination, backed by a no-holds-barred town full of great shops (including Phuket’s largest shopping and entertainment centre, Jungceylon), hotels, bars and nightclubs. The beach is wide and the water is shallow for a long way out, with almost no currents, making it ideal for children to play safely.

For all these reasons, the beach can be crowded in the high season but, to compensate, Patong also offers more than any other beach in the way of water sports – sailing boats, snorkeling, jet-skis, banana boats, parasailing and more.
